Karnataka’s Shakti Scheme is a powerful initiative aimed at empowering women by providing them with free bus travel across the state. Launched by the Karnataka government, this scheme is open to all women residents of Karnataka, regardless of age or financial background, and allows free travel on Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses (excluding luxury and inter-state buses).
Aim of Shakti Scheme?
The Shakti Scheme is designed to make daily life more accessible and affordable for women, especially those who depend on public transportation for work, education, and family obligations. By reducing the burden of travel costs, the scheme not only supports women in their pursuit of economic opportunities but also promotes safety by making public spaces more populated and accessible.
For women in rural areas, the scheme offers even more value, as it helps them stay connected to city centers for work, health services, and other essential needs. By removing transportation costs, it has allowed many women to look for new job opportunities, consider higher education, or simply access healthcare without the worry of fare expenses.
New update Shakti Scheme?
The government is thinking of distributing smart cards to prevent misuse of Shakti Yojana of free bus travel for women in the state.
The cost of the card will be Rs 16 to 17, and who will pay for it will be decided in the cabinet meeting.
An average of 45 lakh women are traveling under Shakti Yojana in the state every day. This action has been taken in the wake of Golmal allegations against the administrator. There is a thought to distribute smart cards to prevent revenue leakage.
Also, some women are getting into arguments with the operators without showing the documents related to getting free tickets. It is said that smart cards will be given to the women who travel for free,to end these confusions about the free travel.
