BPL Shock: Government Orders Strict Action to Cancel BPL Cards Not Meeting Central Norms

The Central Government has instructed the identification and phased removal of ineligible Below Poverty Line (BPL) ration cardholders who fail to meet prescribed standards. However, it has emphasized that no eligible BPL cardholder should have their card canceled. Ineligible cardholders will be given time to voluntarily surrender their cards, failing which notices will be issued before cancellation.

This decision was made during a progress review meeting of the Food, Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs, and Legal Metrology Department, chaired by the Chief Minister in Krishna.

So far, 4,000 government employees have been removed from the BPL list. Under the Anna Bhagya scheme’s Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) initiative, ₹4,692 crores have been released, with ₹3,253 crores already spent by the end of October. A total of 4,44,48,294 beneficiaries are availing themselves of this scheme.

To further strengthen the ration and food grain distribution system at the grassroots level, public participation through awareness committees must be increased. These committees are required to hold regular meetings to ensure transparency and efficiency.

Karnataka has 4,518 petrol pumps, and as of December, 503 of them have been inspected. The government plans to ramp up inspections to curb any fraudulent practices in fuel quality and measurement.

Efforts are being made to streamline the procurement of food grains under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme, ensuring that all processes are completed promptly without causing inconvenience to farmers.

Currently, the state has 1,53,69,945 ration cards benefiting 5,30,88,636 individuals. However, 709 positions in the department remain vacant.

As part of the “One Nation, One Ration Card” initiative, Karnataka is providing ration benefits to 13,383 beneficiaries from other states.

Additionally, the government has implemented the “Anna Suvidha” scheme to deliver food grains directly to the doorsteps of single-member households and individuals above the age of 80. A total of 8,500 beneficiaries are reaping the benefits of this program

The state government remains committed to ensuring that only deserving families benefit from welfare schemes while also enhancing transparency and efficiency in the food distribution system.
