The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme (PM Surya Ghar Yojana) not only aims to provide free electricity to households but also empowers citizens to become self-reliant. Under this central government initiative, financial assistance is provided for installing solar panels on rooftops.
The government has recently introduced several updates to the scheme’s guidelines, making it easier for beneficiaries to avail its benefits. Under the scheme, families can receive up to 300 units of free electricity each month. Additionally, a subsidy of up to ₹78,000 is provided for installing solar panels on rooftops.
Easier Solar Panel Installation with New Payment Options
To simplify the installation process, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has approved two new payment models under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. This ensures that citizens can install solar panels without any upfront expenses, eliminating financial hurdles for beneficiaries.
The updated scheme now allows solar panel installation at zero upfront cost.
New Payment Models
RESCO Model
- Under this model, a third-party organization installs solar panels on your rooftop at no cost. Beneficiaries only pay for the electricity generated by these solar panels.
ULA Model
- In this model, electricity companies or state-designated agencies install solar panels on rooftops for free, offering affordable electricity to beneficiaries.
Subsidy Details
To encourage solar energy adoption, the government provides financial incentives based on the capacity of the solar panels installed:
- ₹30,000 for a 2-kilowatt system
- ₹48,000 for a 3-kilowatt system
- ₹78,000 for systems exceeding 3 kilowatts
The subsidy amount is directly credited to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts, making the process transparent and efficient.
Benefits for Low- and Middle-Income Families
This initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is particularly beneficial for low- and middle-income households, enabling them to become energy self-sufficient. The scheme also promotes the use of clean and renewable energy in India.
By encouraging solar energy adoption, the government aims to create a sustainable and energy-independent future for the nation. Beneficiaries can also sell excess electricity generated by the solar panels back to the power distribution companies, earning additional income.
The PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme is a significant step toward a cleaner and more self-reliant India.
